Get startedI've tried a lot of subscription coffees and most of them arrive tasting like they've been sitting in a warehouse. Shardcore doesn't. The roast date on the bag is always recent and you can taste the difference.
— Marcus T., Subscriber since 2021We switched our cafe to Shardcore wholesale in early 2024. The cupping session before we committed was genuinely useful. Owen was honest about which roasts would work on our espresso machine and which wouldn't.

Today Shardcore supplies a handful of independent cafes, runs a subscription that goes out to just over 800 households, and still roasts twice a week in the same shared unit in Bristol. Owen tastes every batch before it ships. The 48-hour rule has never been broken, including during the postal strikes of late 2022 when Owen switched to a courier for three weeks at his own cost to keep the promise. The sourcing side has gotten more interesting too. There's a direct relationship with the Kochere cooperative in Yirgacheffe that started in 2023, and a new Guatemalan lot from Finca La Hermosa that Owen found at a cupping in Amsterdam in February 2026.
Nothing ships more than 48 hours after it comes off the drum.We roast on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Orders placed before 10am on either day ship the same afternoon. No sitting in a warehouse for three weeks.
Every bag tells you the farm, the altitude, and the processing method. Not just 'Ethiopian blend'. Yirgacheffe, Kochere cooperative, washed, 1,900m.
The roast date is printed on the front of the bag, not hidden under a flap. If it's more than 14 days old when it arrives, we'll replace it, no questions.
Cold brew is one of those things that sounds complicated until you do it once. The process is genuinely simple: coarse-ground coffee, cold water, time in the fridge. The variables that actually matter are the coffee-to-water ratio, the steep time, and the roast you start with. Get those three right and the rest takes care of itself.
Read more →When you see 'washed' or 'natural' on a coffee bag, it refers to how the coffee cherry was processed after picking. Specifically, how the fruit was removed from the bean before drying. It's one of the biggest single variables in how a coffee tastes, and it's worth understanding if you're trying to figure out why two Ethiopian coffees from the same region can taste completely different.
Read more →Most coffee bags carry a best-before date somewhere between 12 and 24 months after roasting. That date tells you when the coffee becomes genuinely undrinkable, not when it's at its best. The roast date. Which many roasters don't print at all. Is the number that actually matters.
Read more →Owen Redfern spent four years as a green-bean sourcing manager at a Bristol roastery before founding Shardcore Blend in autumn 2019. He trained as a Q Grader in 2017 and has cupped competitively at events in Amsterdam and Copenhagen. The frustration that launched Shardcore was specific: an eleven-day average gap between roast and dispatch at his previous employer, documented in a spreadsheet he still has. Outside the roastery, Owen runs a slow 10k most Sunday mornings and keeps a small allotment where he grows more chillies than he can use.
